# Provision your first device

## Overview

This tutorial uses a combination of command line and UI steps for quick device provisioning. For comprehensive coverage of all provisioning methods, see [Begin device provisioning](/guardian/understand-device-provisioning/begin-device-provisioning.md), which covers command line, UI, and API approaches in detail.

### Prerequisites

Make sure you have the following:

* Guardian Cloud account
* Provisioning package for the system
* A test device or the mcguard\_provision utility
* Basic device information (component name, system ID, hardware ID)

### Steps to provision

<details>

<summary>Step 1: Generate a provisioning request (command line)</summary>

On your device or using mcguard\_provision:

```bash
# Generate provisioning request offline
./mcguard_provision \
  --mode provision \
  --component test_component \
  --system test_system \
  --hardware-id test_device_001 \
  --offline \
  /path/to/initial/provisioning/profile
```

This creates two files:

* `test_component_test_system_test_device_001.mcpr` (can be uploaded)
* `test_component_test_system_test_device_001.mcpi` (keep secure, never upload)
